| What a Crappy Wide Screen Format... I could just puke... Martin Hart 07:56:22 |
| | Come on guys. We need some action here. I've been hanging around these parts for almost 15 years. Come on you Canadians, call us Yanks a bunch of assholes. Somebody do something.
I have run the Blu-ray HTWWW in Smilebox on our ten foot screen, after a short demo from the first DVD, and our audience members were just stunned. I haven't seen lots and lots of high def, but so far HTWWW and PATTON, made in Dimension 150, just kick some serious butt, especially compared to films made in the last 20 years.. And for those that want to know, HTWWW noses out PATTON for a razor sharp image, but HTWWW has a lot more depth of field to provide a crisper image. Both are winners.
Now somebody argue with me about that.

Whatever happened to "16 fl or bust?" IIRC, there can be ghosting issues when most projected 3D is run at higher light levels. Still, I agree that 3.5 is too low.

) Someone told me that Robert Wise had preferred no intermission, but offered theatres an alternate version with an intermission and entracte. Has anyone heard anything about that?? I had some conversations with RW about presentation, which is how I got the story about why he has an onscreen overture for WSS and why he chose the opening shot, but I don't recall hearing about an "optional" intermission. The optional Intermission card and music for WSS is on the most recent DVD of the film.

| My take on new movie Alan Radtke 02:17:49 |
| | The way I see this movie is that a bunch of kids with out any experience regardless of learning at the academy getting taught a lesson in very rough conditons in the field by some one with experience how ever obtained, that will help create the characters we all know. Of course they will look like to the friendly vets in the movie and to we the audience as snot nosed youngsters deserving no respect. It would be surprising if the vet or vets who shows Kirk and Spock and the good doctor things, were young looking as well, even though they were older. Most likely later in the orginal series their problems that theEnterprise came up against it was Kirk's ideas all the tricks that Jim Kirk pulled later during the original series can be traced back to those vets that Kirk met and worked with at this movie's time. As for relationships between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy this time of this movie could be the one that started it.

| 2008 Best Animated Feature Oscar Juan F. Lara 21:19:59 |
| | This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved 14 submitted animated features for the BAF oscar.
http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2008/08.11.10a.html
Bolt Delgo Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who! Dragon Hunters Fly Me to the Moon Igor Kung-Fu Panda Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa $9.99 The Sky Crawlers Sword of the Stranger The Tales of Despereaux WALL-E Waltz with Bashir
Amid Amidi has a collection of official websites for all these movies.
http://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/oscar-qualified-features
Two of these movies are animes. "Sword of the Stranger" had a nomimal release in Los Angeles in July. "The Sky Crawlers" will be released later this year, but I don't know what distribution it'll have, if any. That movie is directed by Mamoru Oshii, so I'll be sure to bring my pajamas and a pillow when I see it.
Among the non-wide releases: "Dragon Hunters" is a CGI movie version of the French TV cartoon that Cartoon Network briefly showed. "$9.99$ is a stop motion movie by Talia Rosenthal based on short stories by Etgar Keret. I think it's from Israel. Also from Israel is "Waltz with Bashir", a movie about a massacre that occured during the war in Lebanon in 1982. I think it's made mostly in motion-capture animation. It's getting a tremendous amount of buzz, but more for its important subject matter than for its animation.
There were a LOT of notable absences this year, most likely because the studios didn't bother to submit these movies for consideration.
The Pirates who Don't Do Anything Space Chimps Star Wars: the Clone Wars Roadside Romeo Fear(s) of the Dark Azur and Asmar: the Prince's Quest
None of these movies would've likely been nominated, though I've heard that "Fear(s)" is good enough to merit a nom. But I'd think that submitting your movie anyway would be a courtesy to maximize the number of nominees and raise the profile of the award. If just one of these features had been submitted in time, we would've had five nominees instead of three.

| | CineSIght <CineSight@gmail.com> wrote:
I don't profess to be an expert, but I do know that 3D projection is essentially throwing two different pictures on a screen, and the glasses filtert one out for each eye - meaning half as much light in the picture, which is why a silver, presumably high gain screen is used. I have heard of someone using two projectors focused on top of each other to get the brightness back, but clearly that didn't happen here. Okay, SOME 3-D processes use polarized light... one eye has a horizontally polarized lens, the other has a vertically polarized lens and the projectors set up likewise. These processes use a silver screen because the silver screen preserves the polarization of the light.
If you shine polarized light on a matte white screen, what reflects off is randomly polarized, which of course would make the process unworkable. In fact, the silver screens actually have lower reflectance than some of the higher quality white screen surfaces out there.
I just saw BOLT in 3D in Hollywood. The movie is great fun, well animated, nice to look at, and highly recommended, but it looks about half as bright as a normal film. Like in the old carbon arc days when the two rods weren't aligned well... I saw Chicken Little in this same theatre and, while the story wasn't very bright, the picture was. There is no excuse for a dim image. You should have demanded your money back.
I expect to get a lot of answers at the big 3D Summit next month, but meanwhile, has anyone any idea what was going on? The booth has two digital projectors, both with RealD adapters in front of the lenses, but only one was running. Odds are that the theatre just didn't want to pay the money to do the job right. If there is light loss in the adaptor gadget, you need a brighter projector to deal with it, but that's an easy thing to work out on paper before installing anything. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis."

| Why does Star Trek keep looking backwards? Booster Platinum 02:12:01 |
| | There were already two into-the-past time travel movies, then Enterprise, now a pre-TOS movie?
How are you supposed to have thoughtful science fiction in a setting constrained by 50-year-old notions of science and social progress?
Is the Star Trek franchise now only valuable for nostalgia-exploitation? Are form and brand to trump content and ideas forever now? Won't it ever be inventive and forward-looking again?

Wow! I've just seen the new Star Trek movie trailer and it's just FANTASTIC! Looks more like a James Bond movie than Star Trek ... lol! <snip>
That's because it's not "Star Trek" as we know it. It's another pile of "rebooted" rubbish that has little to do with the franchise we enjoy.
